Transforming a challenging lower-level space into a dynamic destination for learning, gathering, and connection.
As a repeat workplace design partner to Plymouth Rock Assurance, Ebbrell Architecture +Design transformed 8,000 SF within the lower level of the company's 711Atlantic Avenue headquarters into a dedicated training center designed to accommodate onboarding programs of up to 90 employees. Located within ahistoric brick-and-beam building, the space presented significant infrastructure and ceiling-height challenges. EAD embraced those constraints, using bold color, lighting, artwork, and hospitality-inspired amenities to create a vibrant environment that feels distinctly different from a traditional office and supports focused learning, breaks, and social connection.
- Created flexible, divisible classrooms designed around acoustics, lighting, furniture configurations, and AV sightlines to support training programs of varying sizes.
- Integrated a generous café and pre- and post-function lounge to accommodate catered meals, informal breakouts, private calls, and socialization throughout multi-session training days.
- Transformed the constraints of a subterranean, low-ceilinged space through exposed historic structure, dynamic lighting, bold color, and large-scale environmental graphics that give the training center its own identity.
- Introduced unexpected hospitality and recreation elements, including a dedicated game area and comfortable gathering spaces, to encourage employees to recharge and connect outside the classroom.
- Overcame significant existing-building challenges, including a complete floor slab replacement, high water table, low ceiling heights, and new infrastructure required to support the increased occupancy.
